In school we’re taught that our tongues š have specific areas that are susceptible to different tastes: salty, bitter, sour, sweet savoury or umami but is it true that our tongue is divided into specific parts to identify these tastes?
The notion that the tongue is mapped into four areasāsweet, sour, salty and bitter is wrong. There are five basic tastes identified so far, and the entire tongue can sense all of these tastes more or less equally.you have probably heard that you can only taste certain flavors on certain portion of your tongue but thats not actually the case. The section of human brain responsible for perception of taste is called the gustatory cortex which is located right by the area that control chewing and swallowing so the tongue obviously with the help of human brain has the ability to detect and differentiate 5 seperate elements of taste which are broadly classified as salty, bitter, sour, umami, savory through 50 to 100 taste receptors located across the tongue and each receptor can identify type of taste individually.

So the tongue map or The tongue is divided into 4 parts is as a myth!
Different areas of the tongue can taste anything, but although some regions are slightly more sensitive to certain tastes .
